Proposal Submitted to Parliament to Convert National Cathedral Site and Funds into Kofi Annan Museum

A formal proposal has been submitted to Parliament urging the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to consider redirecting the National Cathedral site and its available funds toward the construction of a Kofi Annan Museum.

The proposal, authored by Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang, Founder and President of Save the Nation for Future Leaders, an NGO, was formally communicated in a letter dated September 22, 2026.

According to the document, the initiative seeks to honour the legacy of the late Kofi Annan — Ghana's distinguished diplomat and the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, who was the first sub-Saharan African to hold the office.

*Key highlights of the proposal include:*

*Broader Public Benefit:* The author emphasized that the appeal is not intended to diminish Christianity or religious institutions, but rather seeks an alternative national project at the designated site that offers wider public benefit and cultural preservation.

*Global and National Significance:* The proposed museum would serve as a national institution focusing on history, diplomacy, peace education, leadership, human rights, sustainable development, and cultural tourism.

*Educational and Economic Value:* The facility would house historical artefacts, documents, photographs, and speeches while providing educational spaces for young Ghanaians, researchers, and global visitors, as well as driving economic activity through tourism and conferences.

*Prior Advocacy:* The founder had previously submitted a similar letter to the President of the Republic on July 9, 2026, which was published by _The Insight_ on July 31, 2026.

Parliament, through the Speaker's office, has been urged to facilitate a national discussion on the proposal and to encourage relevant state agencies to undertake the necessary technical, financial, legal, and feasibility assessments.
