E/R: Government Reaffirms Commitment to Muslim Welfare
The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon Grace Akosua Awatey, has reaffirmed government commitment to the welfare of Muslims in Ghana. Speaking at the official turbaning ceremony of Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed on January 17, 2026, at Kyebi Zongo, she emphasized that government has taken concrete steps to support the Muslim community. These initiatives include adding a holiday to the Eid-Ul Fitre festival to ensure Muslims can fully participate in the celebrations, reviewing the 2025 fares to make the 2026 pilgrimage to Mecca more affordable, and establishing Islamic mortuaries across the country to cater to the community's needs. She also highlighted efforts to improve Islamic education, including employing more instructors and providing scholarships to support the education of Muslim students.
