E/R:Odortorm D/A Primary School Crumbles, Teachers, Pupils Suffer

Image
The Odortorm D/A primary school in Ghana's Eastern Region is on the brink of collapse, with cracks visible on the building and pupils at risk. Established in 2000, the school has only two teachers - the headmaster and a female teacher - and lacks basic amenities like electricity and a teachers' bungalow. Headmaster Ahenagi Solomon says the community started building a school block through self-help efforts, but the project stalled. The District Assembly promised to complete it, but nothing has happened. Teacher shortages and irregular school feeding programs have disrupted learning, with enrollment dropping when caterers aren't around. The school relies on the Volta Lake for drinking water, despite having a non-functional borehole. Teachers commute by canoe without life jackets, posing a "life-threatening" risk. The headmaster appeals for government and NGO support, while Oyerepa Tv calls for a teachers' bungalow to ensure safety. Credit: Nana Kwasi Asare/Geor...

The community's 3-unit classroom project is stalled due to funding issues, and they lack telecom network coverage, hindering business and emergencies. Speaking to Oyerepa Tv, residents expressed frustration, citing difficulties in communicating and accessing basic services. With no resolution in sight, they're taking a tough stance, refusing to vote until their needs are met. The community's plea highlights the struggles faced by rural areas in Ghana.
