E/R:Asiakwa Chief Leads Borehole and Tree-Planting Drive to Combat Water Crisis and Galamsey Menace

  The Chief of Asiakwa and Nifahene of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, Daasebre Dr. Twum Ampofo II , has reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of his people by undertaking a dual initiative to address water scarcity and environmental degradation in Asiakwa, Eastern Region. As part of his development agenda, he has constructed nine mechanized boreholes at key locations including funeral grounds, market squares, Zongo, Telecom Area, and Betom. These boreholes aim to alleviate the community’s water crisis, worsened by illegal mining (galamsey) activities that have contaminated local water sources. He pledged to complete additional boreholes by the end of 2025. In parallel, Daasebre launched Phase 3 of the “Operation 12,000 Tree Planting” initiative. This phase alone includes 1,000 coconut and 500 palm trees , raising the total planted to 5,500.   The Okyeman Environmental Protection Brigade has launched a bold and decisive operation to clamp down on illegal mining activities along the Birim River and other nearby water bodies in Ghana’s Eastern Region. The mission, which officially began on April 17, 2025, seeks to restore the river’s natural state, protect the environment, and promote sustainable mining practices across Okyeman. The brigade is spearheaded by Barimah Dr. Kwabena Awuah Parker I, Chief of Sokode-Juaso, and Barimah Pobi Asomaning III, Chief of Akyem Akwadum. The team conducted a comprehensive tour of mining sites in communities such as Akyem Adukrom, Akyem Asikam, Kyebi Pano, Kyebi Habitat, Kyebi Apapam, and Kyebi Adadentem. During the tour, they assessed the extent of environmental degradation and personally cautioned illegal miners to vacate riverbanks and cease operations that threaten the region’s ecosystem.
