Kyebi, Eastern Region – May 2, 2025 The Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has once again underscored the urgent need to eradicate illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, which continue to ravage the environment and threaten the livelihood of communities across Akyem Abuakwa. Speaking at the Abuakwa State Council Meeting held at the Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi on Friday, the revered traditional leader expressed strong support for the newly established Okyeman Environmental Protection Brigade. Tensions have escalated in the Eastern Region as the Akyem Abuakwa Council of Zongo Chiefs, in collaboration with concerned youth groups, have openly rejected the President’s nominee for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position in the Abuakwa South Constituency. At a well-attended press conference in Kyebi, the symbolic and political heart of the Akyem Abuakwa area, the leadership of the Zongo community voiced their dissatisfaction with the nomination of Nana Addo Aikins Jnr., describing it as a blatant disregard for loyalty, dedication, and long-term service to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by grassroots members.
