E/R:Asiakwa Chief Leads Borehole and Tree-Planting Drive to Combat Water Crisis and Galamsey Menace
The Chief of Asiakwa and Nifahene of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, Daasebre Dr. Twum Ampofo II, has reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of his people by undertaking a dual initiative to address water scarcity and environmental degradation in Asiakwa, Eastern Region.
As part of his development agenda, he has constructed nine mechanized boreholes at key locations including funeral grounds, market squares, Zongo, Telecom Area, and Betom. These boreholes aim to alleviate the community’s water crisis, worsened by illegal mining (galamsey) activities that have contaminated local water sources. He pledged to complete additional boreholes by the end of 2025.
In parallel, Daasebre launched Phase 3 of the “Operation 12,000 Tree Planting” initiative. This phase alone includes 1,000 coconut and 500 palm trees, raising the total planted to 5,500. The project targets environmental restoration, climate resilience, and a greener Asiakwa—aligning with Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin’s directive to plant 1 million trees.
During the Akwasidae durbar, Daasebre Dr. Twum Ampofo II condemned the ongoing galamsey activities that threaten Asiakwa's natural resources and called for collective action. He stressed that despite a community-imposed mining ban, illegal operators still mine secretly at night, sometimes with armed resistance. He appealed for government intervention and encouraged residents to report such acts to the palace.
He acknowledged support from residents—home and abroad—and called on NGOs and stakeholders to back his community development agenda. Daasebre believes such collective efforts will unlock Asiakwa’s full potential and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
