E/R: Government Reaffirms Commitment to Muslim Welfare
The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon Grace Akosua Awatey, has reaffirmed government commitment to the welfare of Muslims in Ghana. Speaking at the official turbaning ceremony of Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed on January 17, 2026, at Kyebi Zongo, she emphasized that government has taken concrete steps to support the Muslim community. These initiatives include adding a holiday to the Eid-Ul Fitre festival to ensure Muslims can fully participate in the celebrations, reviewing the 2025 fares to make the 2026 pilgrimage to Mecca more affordable, and establishing Islamic mortuaries across the country to cater to the community's needs.
She also highlighted efforts to improve Islamic education, including employing more instructors and providing scholarships to support the education of Muslim students. Hon Awatey congratulated Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed on his turbaning ceremony and pledged her support, including central government assistance, to develop the Zongo community.
Osabarima Apagya Ofori, Chief of Kyebi Apapam and representative of Okyenhene Osagyefo Amotia Ofori Panin, said Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed's enskinment as a chief is due to his high educational profile, which will help reduce radicalism in the area. He noted that the Zongo youth are often exploited for radical and violent activities, and Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed's leadership is expected to bring positive change.
Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed thanked all for the confidence reposed in him, calling for unity and togetherness for national development. He pledged to transform the Zongo community into a clean and vibrant area, free from violence, and appealed to all to support the effort to build a better Kyebi Zongo community.
The ceremony was attended by the Abuakwa South Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Addo Aikins Jnr, the press, and the general public.
