E/R:Awukugua Residents Suspend Tax Payments, Threaten Demonstration Over Dilapidated JHS

Residents and concerned citizens of Awukugua in the Okere District of the Eastern Region have announced the suspension of payment of taxes to the District Assembly and other government institutions, effective Monday, September 7, 2026.


According to the residents, the decision will remain in force until urgent steps are taken to rehabilitate the Awukugua United Junior High School, which they say has been neglected for several years.


The residents are also demanding that government officials refrain from visiting the community until the school’s condition is addressed, describing their action as a demonstration of their frustration over what they consider prolonged government neglect.


The Awukugua United JHS is reportedly facing serious infrastructural challenges, including dilapidated and roofless classroom blocks, inadequate furniture and poor sanitation facilities.


The residents say the conditions pose risks to the safety and well-being of students while also creating an unfavourable working environment for teachers and negatively affecting teaching and learning.



They claim that several appeals, petitions and community engagements have been made to draw attention to the situation, but efforts to secure meaningful intervention have so far yielded little results.


The community insists that education is a fundamental right and that children in Awukugua deserve a safe and conducive environment in which to learn.


Meanwhile, the residents have announced plans for a massive demonstration on Friday, September 18, 2026, involving community elders, youth groups, parents, concerned citizens and schoolchildren.


They are calling on the government and relevant authorities to urgently intervene and rehabilitate the school.


The residents say they will continue to demand action until the concerns surrounding Awukugua United JHS are resolved.
