E/R: Ubuntu Urges Ghanaians to Support NPP's Free SHS Program Amid NDC’s Promised Review
Mr. Daniel Obeng Acquah, popularly known as Ubuntu, the 1st Vice Chairman of the Abuakwa North NPP and a member of the NPP Manifesto Committee on Education, has voiced concerns over the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s proposed review of the free Senior High School (SHS) policy. Speaking as Ghana approaches the 2024 general elections, Mr. Obeng Acquah emphasized the NPP’s commitment to sustaining and improving the policy, which has benefited nearly 5.7 million Ghanaian students to date.
Highlighting the NDC's past performance, Mr. Obeng Acquah questioned the party's capacity to manage such a large-scale educational initiative, citing their previous challenges with paying feeding grants for secondary schools in the three northern regions during John Mahama’s administration. "If the NDC struggled with a relatively small feeding grant program, how can they effectively oversee a nationwide free SHS initiative?" he questioned, pointing out that the NDC's previous handling of educational support raised doubts about their prioritization of vulnerable citizens.
In contrast, Mr. Obeng Acquah commended the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for managing the free SHS program effectively. According to him, the NPP’s dedication to the program underscores its commitment to educational access and equity in Ghana. "To ensure the sustainability and success of free SHS, Ghanaians should support Dr. Bawumia, who not only believes in this policy but has championed its benefits," he remarked, adding that Dr. Bawumia’s understanding of the program’s significance makes him the best candidate to carry it forward.
Mr. Obeng Acquah further emphasized the importance of holding political parties accountable for their past actions and evaluating their capability to fulfill future promises. As Ghana moves toward the 2024 elections, he called on Ghanaians to reflect on each party's track record with education and to support leaders who have shown commitment to policies that directly benefit the youth and future of the nation.
