E/R: Akyem Anyinasin Residents Vow to Resist Small-Scale Mining to Protect Water Bodies

AKYEM ANYINASIN — Chiefs, leaders and residents of Akyem Anyinasin in the Abuakwa North Municipality have declared an uncompromising stance against all forms of small-scale and illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in their community.


Their position was contained in a petition dated September 22, 2026, and addressed to the Minister for the Interior by the advocacy group, Save the Nation for Future Leaders, led by its Founder and President, Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang. In the petition, the residents resolved not to engage in, support, or permit any mining activity that threatens their environment.


According to the petition, the community depends heavily on a single principal water body for its daily survival, and any pollution or degradation of that source would leave residents with severely limited alternatives.


The petition further highlighted that the local water network connects directly to the River Densu and flows towards the Weija Dam. As a result, any upstream contamination could destabilize downstream water resources and increase the burden on water treatment systems.


The leaders stressed that their opposition to mining is not a rejection of development, but a necessary safeguard to ensure the community remains economically and socially viable.


Copies of the petition have been forwarded to key state institutions, including the President of the Republic of Ghana, the Minister for Defence, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Defence Staff, the National Security Coordinator, the Director-General of the Bureau of National Intelligence, and the Municipal Chief Executive for Abuakwa North.


The people of Akyem Anyinasin are therefore calling on national security authorities and the government to respect their irrevocable decision to keep their lands and water resources safe from the devastating impacts of mining.
