W/R:Bonuama Makes History as 39 Patients Receive 47 Free Surgeries in Three Days

BONUAMA, WESTERN REGION — Bonuama Polyclinic in the Wassa Amenfi Central District has recorded a major milestone in rural healthcare delivery after 39 patients underwent a total of 47 surgical procedures free of charge during a three-day medical outreach.


The outreach, held from Wednesday to Friday, was organised by the Western Region Medical Superintendents Group, led by Dr. Frederick Yaw Sarpong, to provide surgical care to residents who might otherwise have had to travel long distances and incur significant costs to access treatment.


According to the District Director of Health Services for Wassa Amenfi Central, Alhaji Abdul Ganiyu Kantamah Nuhu, the initiative marks the first time a surgical outreach of such scale has been conducted at the Bonuama Polyclinic.


The 47 procedures performed on the 39 patients included 33 hernia repairs, four myomectomies, two hysterectomies, two hydrocelectomies and six lipoma excisions. Some patients underwent more than one procedure because they had multiple conditions requiring treatment.


In addition to the surgeries, 203 people were screened during the outreach, including 150 adults. Among the adults screened, health professionals identified cases of elevated blood pressure, elevated blood glucose and other medical conditions.


Those diagnosed with health conditions were treated and linked to appropriate care for follow-up.


The outreach provided significant relief to residents of Bonuama and surrounding communities, particularly farmers, market women and families who face financial and geographical barriers to accessing specialist healthcare.


For some beneficiaries, the free surgeries offered an opportunity to address conditions they had reportedly lived with for extended periods without treatment.


The initiative was sponsored by Dr. Kwabena Adjei, former Chief Executive Officer of Kasapreko Company Limited and a native of Bonuama.


Beyond sponsoring the medical outreach, Dr. Adjei is credited with building and fully furnishing the Bonuama Polyclinic. He has also supported the community with a police post, school, market and bank.


The outreach brought together medical directors from hospitals across the Western Region, who temporarily left their respective facilities to provide specialist services at Bonuama.


The team worked alongside health professionals permanently stationed at the polyclinic, demonstrating the impact of collaboration between regional medical leadership, local health workers and private sponsors.


Special recognition has also been given to Dr. Obed Damptey and the health workers at Bonuama Polyclinic for their continued service in the rural community.


The successful outreach has renewed calls for stronger collaboration between government, health professionals, philanthropists and local communities to improve access to quality healthcare in underserved areas.


The three-day exercise has been described as a significant chapter in the history of Bonuama Polyclinic, with residents benefiting from specialist surgical services without having to travel outside the community.
