The Chief of Akyem Akwadum in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region, Barimah Pobi Asomaning III, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting women in the community, particularly those living in houses that are in poor and unsafe conditions.


He said as the traditional leader of the community, he could not remain indifferent to the challenges facing his people, stressing that improving the welfare of residents remains one of his major responsibilities.


Barimah Pobi Asomaning III explained that some women who voluntarily made their lands available for development initiatives have also benefited from various projects undertaken in the community.


According to him, his efforts to support the less privileged are not driven by wealth, but by his own experience of hardship while growing up.


He disclosed that he experienced poverty during his childhood and witnessed the maltreatment of his mother and himself by his stepfather. He said the difficult circumstances compelled him to learn cobbling after school as a means of surviving.


The chief said these experiences have shaped his desire to help vulnerable members of society and ensure that people in his community have better living conditions.


He made the remarks on Saturday, August 8, 2026, during the installation of two new sub-chiefs at the Akyem Akwadum Chief’s Palace.


The newly installed traditional leaders are Nana Yaw Anim, Asafosiripi Chief, and Nana Akosua Afayose, Mmabaahemaa of Akyem Akwadum.


Speaking to the media, Nana Yaw Anim expressed appreciation to Barimah Pobi Asomaning III for entrusting him with the responsibility and pledged his full support for the chief’s development initiatives.


He identified the proposed construction of a market as one of the key projects he intends to support, saying the facility would stimulate economic activity, create opportunities for residents and contribute to the growth of Akyem Akwadum.


Nana Akosua Afayose, the newly installed Mmabaahemaa, also pledged to champion initiatives aimed at empowering women in the community.


She said she would mobilise women to acquire employable skills and learn various trades to enable them to become financially independent and contribute to the upkeep of their families.


She added that empowering women economically would strengthen households and play an important role in promoting the socio-economic development of Akyem Akwadum.
