E/R: Nkawkaw Central Market Traders Appeal For Alternative Trading Spaces Ahead of Final Phase Demolition

Traders affected by the planned demolition of the last block of the Nkawkaw Central Market say while they accept the need for modernization and redevelopment, they are appealing for adequate alternative trading spaces, proper consultation and realistic relocation timelines to protect their livelihoods.


The Nkawkaw Sanaahene, Nana Onwona Asante, speaking on behalf of the Chief of Nkawkaw, dismissed claims that the exercise is politically motivated. He explained that the demolition is solely part of the market redevelopment agenda and urged affected traders to conduct themselves peacefully during the exercise, which he said will help decongest the central business district of Nkawkaw.


Meanwhile, the Municipal Engineer of the Kwahu West Assembly, Mr. Eric Adu Nyamekye, disclosed that a five-member committee, after a physical assessment of the remaining structure, recommended its demolition for redevelopment.


He appealed to traders, especially market women, to cooperate with the Assembly to allow the demolition to proceed, stressing that the project will ultimately improve trading conditions in the market.
