E/R:Flooding in Abuakwa South Leaves One Missing, Displaces Thousands Across Several Communities
Akyem Odumase, Eastern Region– A downpour on Sunday, June 14, 2026, left one person feared dead and thousands homeless after floods swept through parts of the Abuakwa South Municipality. The most severe case was reported at an illegal mining site in Akyem Odumase, where a miner is still trapped underground.
According to _Mr. Aikins Ofori, Abuakwa South Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO)_, areas hit hardest by the rains include Kibi Zongo-Pano, Mines Electoral Area, New Town (Apostolic), Rasta Junction, Domeabra, and Kyebi Odumase. Rescue teams were yet to recover the body from the galamsey pit in Kyebi Odumase as of press time.
The NADMO boss described the frequent flooding as a persistent challenge for the municipality. He blamed it on construction in watercourses, poorly planned structures, waste dumped in drains, and unregulated mining that has damaged natural water channels.
NADMO, he noted, has already assessed the damage and will meet with Municipal Chief Executive _Hon. Addo Aikins Jnr_ to agree on relief support and long-term solutions.
With more heavy rains forecast, Mr. Ofori urged residents to stop building in flood-prone zones and to avoid dumping rubbish in gutters to minimize damage. He also appealed to illegal miners to restore mined-out lands. “NADMO remains committed to disaster management and safeguarding lives,” he said.
Some victims who spoke to the media blamed galamsey for worsening the floods and called on authorities to take firm action to end the menace.
