E/R:Former and Current Abuakwa North MPs Endorse Dr. Bawumia for NPP Flagbearer, Call for Unity and 2028 Victory
The former and current Members of Parliament for Abuakwa North Constituency have publicly affirmed their unwavering support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2026 elections.
Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo, popularly known as Hajia Kande, former Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and Hon. Nana Kwame Ampaw Addo Frempong, the current MP for the constituency, both spoke during Dr. Bawumia’s visit to Akyem Tafo on November 29, 2025, held at the Mid-Tafo Presbyterian Church Auditorium.
Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo highlighted the propaganda deployed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 general elections, which falsely blamed Dr. Bawumia for Ghana’s economic challenges, ignoring the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. She noted that even President Mahama later admitted at a United Nations meeting that the global conflict had affected Ghana’s economic stability.
She further dismissed accusations that Dr. Bawumia supplied weapons to his Mumprusi tribe against the Kusasi in the Upper East Region, describing them as baseless. “Killings during the NDC’s nine months in office have already surpassed the total during the NPP’s eight years,” she emphasized, underscoring that Dr. Bawumia is beyond reproach and that introducing a new candidate could expose the party to unnecessary criticism.
Hon. Twum-Ampofo urged delegates to support Dr. Bawumia, describing him as a candidate who embodies both the welfare of the NPP and Ghana’s development. Using an analogy, she advised, “Delegates shouldn’t crush the housefly eating their sour out of anger, lest they hurt their own sour while the fly escapes.”
Hon. Nana Kwame Ampaw Addo Frempong added that for the NPP to secure victory in 2028, the party must present a strong and credible candidate. He referenced the energetic mobilization of the youth wing during the 2016 elections that helped secure votes for Nana Akufo-Addo, urging that the same enthusiasm be applied to the 2028 general elections.
Speaking from personal conviction, Hon. Addo Frempong emphasized, “I want to win 2028, not 2032.” He called for unity ahead of the flagbearer elections and beyond, encouraging delegates to forgive any past offenses for the sake of the party.
He highlighted that NDC Members of Parliament are reportedly apprehensive about Dr. Bawumia’s candidature due to his competence and expressed concern over the opposition’s attempts to reclaim NPP seats through by-elections and court rulings, citing the recent Dambai rerun. He assured delegates that Dr. Bawumia is already widely accepted within the party, is unblemished, and requires no replacement that could jeopardize the NPP’s future.
Among those who attended and witnessed the endorsement were notable party figures including Nana Akomea, former CEO of STC; Hon. Samuel Atta-Kyea, former MP for Abuakwa South; Hon. Umar Babs Bodinga, former MCE for Abuakwa North; Mr. Frank, a local party official; Hon. Kofi Okyere Agyekum, former MP for Fanteakwa South; and Hon. Sammy Awuku, MP for Akuapem North.
He concluded by urging delegates to vote for Dr. Bawumia to ensure continued socio-economic development in Ghana.
