E/R:Calm Restored at Kukurantumi After Violent Clashes Over Suspect’s Death
Tensions that erupted in Kukurantumi, a town in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region, have begun to ease after violent clashes between irate youth and the police on Sunday, 21st September 2025.
The unrest followed the death of a young man identified only as Bright, popularly known as “B Ball.” According to residents, the police, led by Chief Inspector Fumadoh, initially went to retrieve a stolen television but later attempted to arrest the deceased for allegedly possessing a substance suspected to be Indian hemp.
In the course of the arrest, reports indicate that Bright allegedly stabbed a community police officer, an act which triggered the excessive force used by the officers to subdue him. He sustained injuries during the confrontation and was later rushed to the hospital, where he died.
News of his death sparked outrage among the youth, who stormed the Kukurantumi Police Station and set the facility ablaze. The chaos forced the police to fire warning shots and call for reinforcements.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Charles Yeboah Darko, the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Awatey, the Regional Police Commander COP Twumasi Ankrah, and Barimah Dr. Kwabena Awuah Parker I, Chief of Akyem Sokode-Juaso, intervened to restore calm. Addressing the youth, Barimah Dr. Parker urged restraint, emphasizing that the role of the police is to maintain law and order and not to harm civilians.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Police Command has taken over the matter, with the officers involved transferred to Accra for interrogation. Authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation, promising that any officers found culpable will face the necessary sanctions.
As of Monday morning, calm had been restored in Kukurantumi, with police personnel stationed around the community and the police station to maintain security and prevent further disturbances.
