E/R:Kwahu West MCE Leads Massive Clean-Up to Mark National Sanitation Day

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Kwahu West, Hon. Tamimu Halidu, on Saturday led a major clean-up exercise in Nkawkaw to mark the beginning of this month’s National Sanitation Day, reinforcing calls for routine environmental cleanliness.

The five-hour operation, which began at 5:00 AM, saw a united front of stakeholders including the Ghana Fire Service, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, various local institutions, volunteers, and the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly. The cleanup started from the Nkawkaw New Station, continued through the Central Business District, and ended at the Nkawkaw Central Market.

Participants desilted heavily clogged gutters, removed weeds, and collected large amounts of waste, including plastic materials, sachet water packs, and discarded clothing. The Assembly provided essential logistics such as compaction trucks, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, Wellington boots, gloves, and nose masks to support the effort.

The exercise attracted strong community participation, with shop owners, traders, and hawkers joining in to help rid the streets and marketplaces of filth.

Speaking after the exercise, Hon. Tamimu Halidu emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining sanitation across the municipality. He urged residents to adopt positive attitudes toward cleanliness and take ownership of their surroundings.

“We cannot continue to live in unhygienic conditions. Sanitation is a shared responsibility, and we must all come together to keep our communities clean,” he said.

The MCE further noted that poor attitudes among traders and some residents contribute to the persistent blockage of drains. He assured that the Assembly will enforce sanitation by-laws to hold offenders accountable.

He called on all Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of regular environmental cleaning and pledged that the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly will continue to lead by example in ensuring a healthier and cleaner environment.
