E/R: Akyem Abuakwa Chiefs Rally Behind Education, Agriculture, and Health to Boost Development

Traditional leaders in Akyem Abuakwa have reaffirmed their commitment to national development by pledging support to government initiatives in education, agriculture, and healthcare. The pledge was made during the 2025 Ohumkan Festival held at Akyem Tafo Rovers Park on Saturday, June 21.

Speaking at the grand durbar, Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV, Chief of Akyem Tafo, called on the government to prioritize support for educational infrastructure, particularly at WBM Zion Senior High School. He noted that the Free SHS policy has significantly increased student enrollment, creating a pressing need for additional classrooms, dormitories, and furniture at the school’s new site.

Daasebre Adusei Peasah also announced that a philanthropist had donated 50 computers to the palace, where a large hall has been converted into an ICT center. The facility, now handed over to the Ghana Education Service (GES), currently houses 30 computers and aims to enhance ICT education in the community.

On healthcare, he drew attention to the urgent need for the expansion of the New Tafo Government Hospital. He lamented that due to inadequate space, male and female patients are often forced to share the same wards—a situation he described as unacceptable and requiring immediate intervention.

In the area of agriculture, the chief appealed for the decentralization of cocoa sector offices to bring essential services closer to local cocoa farmers, thereby improving cooperation and productivity. He further expressed concern over the employment practices at the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG), located in the area. Quoting a retired director, he revealed that despite CRIG being a research and continuous learning institution, local youth have long been excluded from employment opportunities in favor of outsiders. He urged the current administration to reverse this trend and prioritize local inclusion.

Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyenhene, endorsed Daasebre Adusei Peasah’s concerns, stressing the importance of empowering grassroots communities through agriculture, education, and health. He urged all chiefs to support His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s vision and development agenda, emphasizing that governance must be a collective effort.

Representing the President, Chief of Staff Hon. Julius Debrah assured the chiefs and people of Akyem Tafo of the government’s commitment to completing the WBM Zion School infrastructure and addressing the challenges facing the New Tafo Government Hospital before the end of President Mahama’s term. He also congratulated Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV on his 40th anniversary as Chief of Akyem Tafo and pledged continued government support for the area.
