E/R:Atiwa East DCE Refutes Illegal Mining Claims, Pledges Support for Farmers and Lawful Mining

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atiwa East, Hon. Owusu Nti Ernest, has strongly refuted claims implicating him in illegal mining, labeling the accusations as unfounded and misleading.

During a media engagement, Hon. Owusu Nti asserted that the allegations were orchestrated by illegal miners who feel threatened by his persistent campaign for responsible mining in the district.

“I’ve been advocating against illegal mining even before becoming DCE. Now that I hold this office, they are worried I’ll intensify the crackdown on their activities, hence their attempts to defame me,” he said.

He voiced serious concern about the exploitation of vulnerable farmers, whose lands are often seized by illegal miners without compensation. The DCE reaffirmed his dedication to defending these farmers and ensuring that all mining operations adhere to legal and sustainable standards.

Hon. Owusu Nti also disclosed that he is collaborating with all relevant mining stakeholders to implement practical solutions that encourage responsible mining and contribute to the district’s socio-economic growth.

He called on the public to disregard the accusations and instead support the district’s efforts to restore order and development.

Backing the DCE, the NDC Constituency Secretary for Atiwa East, Mr. Begyina Isaac Godwin, challenged Mr. Daniel Mensah—also known as Abeiku—to substantiate his claims or face legal repercussions.

Mr. Begyina accused Mr. Mensah of a history of unlawfully acquiring lands and participating in illegal mining, noting that despite several reports to authorities, he has evaded accountability.

Mr. Mensah had, on May 23, 2025, held a press conference accusing the DCE of involvement in galamsey, alleging it was causing environmental harm and risking lives and property. However, both the DCE and local NDC officials have dismissed the claims as baseless and politically driven.
