NHIS Free Dialysis Program to Continue Until Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund Becomes Fully Operational

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has reassured the public that the Free Dialysis program under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will continue until the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, also known as the "Mahama Cares" initiative, becomes fully operational.

According to a statement issued by NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe on March 21, 2025, the initiative is aimed at ensuring affordable and accessible healthcare for all, particularly for patients suffering from kidney disease who rely on dialysis treatment.

The Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, spearheaded by former President John Dramani Mahama, is designed to support individuals with chronic diseases, including kidney failure, cancer, and heart disease. The Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has set up a seven-member team to oversee its successful implementation.

NHIA has pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition when the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund becomes fully operational.
