President John Mahama Revokes Appointments of MMDCEs and Assembly Members
The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has officially revoked the appointments of Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDCEs) and Assembly Members who were appointed under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).
This decision, outlined in a letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, and dated January 8, 2025, takes immediate effect. The revocation applies to all individuals holding these positions under the relevant sections of the Local Governance Act.
In the interim, the President has directed that the respective Coordinating Directors of the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) assume responsibility as Acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are made.
The letter, addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, has been copied to the Vice President and the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President.
This directive forms part of the ongoing restructuring and streamlining efforts aimed at enhancing local governance and fostering development across the country. The affected appointees have been advised to comply with the decision while the government moves to fill the vacant positions.
