Proposal for Kofi Annan Museum Gains Public Attention

A proposal calling for the establishment of a national museum in honour of the late former United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, has been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama by the Founder and President of Save the Nation For Future Leaders, Mr. Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang.


In a formal letter dated 22nd June 2026 and addressed to the President at Jubilee House, Mr. Atta Apeakorang urged the Government of Ghana to establish a Kofi Annan Museum to preserve and celebrate the life, achievements, and enduring legacy of one of Ghana's most distinguished global statesmen.


According to the proposal, the museum would serve as a permanent repository for Kofi Annan's speeches, awards, photographs, official documents, and other historical artefacts, ensuring that future generations appreciate his immense contribution to world peace, diplomacy, human rights, sustainable development, and international cooperation.


The proposal highlighted Kofi Annan's remarkable leadership as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, noting that his efforts in promoting dialogue, conflict resolution, and global unity earned him and the United Nations the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize.


Mr. Atta Apeakorang stated that beyond preserving history, the museum would function as an educational and research centre where students, diplomats, researchers, and visitors could learn about peacebuilding, international relations, and global citizenship. He believes such an institution would inspire young Ghanaians to emulate Kofi Annan's values of integrity, excellence, tolerance, leadership, and selfless service.


The proposal also argued that the museum would strengthen Ghana's tourism sector by attracting visitors from across Africa and the international community. It noted that as Kofi Annan's homeland, Ghana is uniquely positioned to preserve and showcase his global legacy while enhancing the country's image as a champion of peace and diplomacy.


In addition to the museum, Mr. Atta Apeakorang proposed the institution of an annual Kofi Annan Day, preferably observed on 8 April, the late statesman's birthday. He suggested that the day be dedicated to promoting peace, national unity, dialogue, volunteerism, and reconciliation through nationwide educational programmes, public lectures, community service activities, and interfaith engagements.


The proposal further recommended that the museum host annual conferences, leadership programmes, peace forums, and public lectures to continue advancing the ideals Kofi Annan championed throughout his distinguished career.


Mr. Atta Apeakorang concluded that establishing the museum would not only honour Kofi Annan's extraordinary legacy but also reaffirm Ghana's commitment to peace, international cooperation, and humanitarian values. He appealed to President Mahama to initiate discussions with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the Kofi Annan Foundation, educational institutions, cultural bodies, and international partners to bring the project to fruition.


The proposal was signed by Mr. Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang, Founder and President of Save the Nation For Future Leaders, who expressed optimism that the initiative would become a lasting national monument celebrating one of Ghana's greatest sons and his invaluable contribution to humanity.
