E/R:Kwahu West Assembly Fails to Elect Presiding Member After Two Rounds of Voting
Nkawkaw, Eastern Region– The Kwahu West Municipal Assembly failed to elect a Presiding Member on Tuesday after two rounds of voting ended inconclusively.
The election, supervised by the Municipal Officer of the Electoral Commission, saw both contestants fall short of the required votes. _Hon. Madam Agnes Okanta_ and the incumbent Presiding Member, _Hon. Emmanuel Bamfo_, each failed to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority of 27 votes needed to win the position.
As a result, the Assembly adjourned proceedings. A fresh election is expected to be conducted within the next ten days in accordance with the Local Governance Act.
Speaking to journalists after the failed polls, the Municipal Chief Executive, _Hon. Tamimu Halidu_, appealed to Assembly members to put the interest of the municipality first and work toward electing a Presiding Member without further delay.
He warned that the absence of a Presiding Member will negatively affect the Assembly’s performance under the District Performance Assessment Tool, DPAT. According to him, without a substantive Presiding Member, the Assembly will not qualify for additional performance-based funds beyond the District Assemblies Common Fund, making it difficult to supplement its already inadequate Internally Generated Funds, IGF.
Hon. Tamimu Halidu pleaded with Assembly members to prioritize the interest of Kwahu West and ensure the Assembly gets a Presiding Member to secure funding and improve service delivery.
The Assembly is expected to reconvene within 10 days for another round of voting.
