E/R:Bunso Cocoa College Lands Must Be Protected - Gyaasehene Appeals to Govt
The Gyaasehene of Bunso in the Akyem Abuakwa area, Barfour Odi Asempa Amanfo-panin, has expressed grave concern over attempts by illegal miners to encroach on the Bunso Cocoa College lands, reserved for research and teaching purposes. He has appealed to the Ghanaian government to intervene and protect the lands, citing the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations.
Barfour Odi Asempa revealed that despite rejecting offers from mining companies, some individuals are using the name of Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Board Chairman of Ghana's Cocoa Board, to invade the reserve lands. He expressed confidence that Dr. Ofosu Ampofo would not compromise on the protection of natural resources.
The Gyaasehene noted that one mining company, Gold Empire, had previously been reported to NAIMOS and had its equipment seized, but has since resumed operations. He is calling for NAIMOS to be stationed at the Bunso Cocoa reserve lands to ensure full protection.
Residents have also expressed dissatisfaction with the use of Bunso land for mining purposes, citing concerns about the destruction of livelihoods and the environment. The Gyaasehene emphasized that the 69th independence anniversary should be an opportunity for development, not retrogression.
