Hajia Mariam Dzifa Mohammed Demands Urgent Probe into Alleged Threats and Abuse of Authority in Quashikrom

Hajia Mariam Dzifa Mohammed has called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Minister for the Interior, the National Security Secretariat, and all relevant state institutions to immediately investigate allegations of threats, intimidation, abuse of authority, and actions reportedly intended to terrorize residents of Quashikrom and surrounding communities in Lower West Akim.

According to Hajia Mariam, reports from the area suggest a disturbing pattern of conduct allegedly involving certain sub-chiefs, their associates, and some police officers. This, she said, has created an atmosphere of fear, uncertainty, and insecurity among residents.

She warned that continued inaction could erode public confidence in state institutions, threaten social stability, and undermine the rule of law.

“The peace and security of citizens must never be compromised by individuals who use influence, authority, or intimidation to silence others. Ghana is governed by laws, not fear. No citizen should feel unsafe in their own community,” she declared.

Hajia Mariam emphasized that allegations involving the misuse of traditional influence or state authority require immediate scrutiny and decisive intervention by the appropriate institutions.

She added that the credibility of law enforcement agencies depends on their willingness to investigate all complaints fairly, professionally, and without interference.

“When citizens raise concerns about threats, intimidation, or misconduct, those concerns must not be ignored. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. Any perception that individuals are operating above the law undermines public trust and weakens the foundations of our democracy,” she stated.

While acknowledging the Ghana Police Service’s vital role in maintaining law and order nationwide, she expressed concern that allegations involving a few officers could tarnish the reputation of the many dedicated personnel who serve with integrity.

“The overwhelming majority of police officers perform their duties honorably and deserve recognition for their sacrifices. However, where there are credible allegations of misconduct, abuse of power, bias, or negligence, swift and transparent investigations are essential. Accountability is not an attack on institutions; it is a necessary condition for strengthening them,” she emphasized.

She urged all relevant authorities to act without delay to prevent any escalation of tensions and to reassure residents that their safety, rights, and freedoms remain protected under the 1992 Constitution.

Hajia Mariam also appealed to traditional authorities, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders to support efforts aimed at preserving peace, promoting dialogue, and preventing further divisions in the area.

“The future of Lower West Akim must be built on justice, peace, respect for human dignity, and the rule of law. Development cannot thrive where fear prevails, and communities cannot prosper where citizens feel threatened or unprotected,” she said.

She urged residents to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and vigilant while lawful institutions carry out their responsibilities.

The statement concluded with a firm call for accountability, transparency, and justice, stressing that the protection of citizens and the preservation of peace must remain the highest priority of all public institutions entrusted with authority.

“No person is above the law. No community should be governed by fear. The people of Lower West Akim deserve protection, justice, and peace, and every effort must be made to ensure that these principles are upheld without compromise.”
