E/R:Kukurantumi Farmers Protest Cattle Invasion and Sand Winning Activities, Petition MCE for Action
Members of the Akyem Kukurantumi Farmers Association on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, embarked on a peaceful demonstration to protest the persistent invasion of cattle on their farmlands, as well as the activities of sand winners, which they say have led to the destruction of their crops and threatened their livelihoods.
The farmers marched through principal streets of the town and later presented a petition to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) at the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly in Akyem Kukurantumi, in Ghana’s Eastern Region. Placards carried by the demonstrators bore inscriptions such as “The cattle must leave,” “Stop selling our farms,” “Kukurantumi needs peace,” and “Our farms are being destroyed.”
The demonstration was conducted peacefully under the supervision of the New Tafo District Police Command.
Presenting the petition, the leader of the association, Mr. Emmanuel Kudjo, said nomadic cattle herders have tormented farmers in the area for more than seven years, destroying farm produce and posing serious threats to their personal security. He added that illegal sand winning activities have also become a major concern, with sand winners allegedly invading farmlands without permission and causing extensive damage to crops.
Mr. Kudjo lamented that several letters and complaints submitted to the Municipal Assembly over the years have yielded no results, stressing that the situation continues to worsen. He warned that if urgent action is not taken, the farmers would escalate the matter to the Eastern Regional Minister and, if necessary, the Presidency.
Receiving the petition, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Charles Yeboah Darko, popularly known as Ozey, assured the farmers that swift action would be taken to flush out nomadic cattle from the municipality and to address the activities of unauthorized sand winners.
He further called on residents to support the H.E. John Dramani Mahama–led NDC administration in its quest to ensure continuous socio-economic development of the Abuakwa North Municipality and the country at large.
