E/R:MP Abena Osei-Asare Commissions Doctors’ Bungalow at Enyiresi Government Hospital
The Enyiresi Government Hospital in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region has received a newly constructed two-storey self-contained building to serve as accommodation for doctors, courtesy of the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare.
The facility was commissioned and officially handed over on 19th December 2025. Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare explained that the project was motivated by the long-standing challenge of inadequate accommodation, which often discourages doctors from accepting postings to rural areas. She said the provision of decent housing is key to attracting and retaining medical professionals in such communities.
The MP further disclosed that through her efforts, over 50 staff of the hospital who were previously paid through the hospital’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) were absorbed onto the government payroll under the previous NPP administration. She reiterated that healthcare has remained a top priority for the New Patriotic Party, citing former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s elevation of the Enyiresi Government Hospital to district status, as well as the expansion works initiated under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, including the establishment of accident and childcare centres, which are expected to be commissioned soon.
Hon. Osei-Asare also appealed to the central government to increase funding for the health sector, particularly to address accommodation challenges facing doctors, noting that refusal of postings due to lack of housing has been reported in some parts of the country, including the Upper West Region.
The District Chief Executive for Atiwa East, Hon. Ernest Ntim, expressed gratitude to the MP for the initiative, describing it as a major intervention that has addressed a long-standing accommodation challenge in the district. He said the project complements government’s development agenda and assured residents that more developmental projects are expected in the future.
Receiving the facility on behalf of the hospital, the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Osei Mensah Ebenezer, said the new bungalow resolves one of the hospital’s most critical challenges. He, however, raised concerns about congestion at the maternity unit, attributing it to the increasing number of deliveries at the facility. According to him, the situation has become worrying, with some patients forced to sleep on the floor, and he therefore appealed to government to expedite the completion and commissioning of the maternity unit to ease the pressure.
The new doctors’ bungalow is expected to significantly improve staff welfare and enhance healthcare delivery at the Enyiresi Government Hospital.
