E/R:Akyem Abuakwa State Council Holds Fourth Quarter Meeting, Okyenhene Speaks on Insurance, Decentralisation and Illegal Mining

The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has successfully held its 2025 Fourth Quarter State Council Meeting at the Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi, bringing together Nananom and indigenes from across Okyeman to deliberate on key development issues.

The meeting, held on Friday, 19th December 2025, marked the final State Council gathering for the year and provided an opportunity for reflection on the year under review and planning for the year ahead. Chiefs and representatives from all divisions of Akyem Abuakwa State, including Adonten, Benkum, Nifa, Gyaase, Oseawuo, Kyebi, the Amantuomiensa, and indigenes from over 940 towns and villages, were present.

Addressing the gathering, the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, expressed concern over the low subscription of chiefs to an insurance scheme designed to protect their welfare. He described the situation as worrying and stressed that such welfare measures are crucial for securing the future of their descendants, especially the youth.

The Okyenhene further urged the government to strengthen Ghana’s decentralisation system rather than concentrating governance in capital cities, noting that effective decentralisation would boost economic development at the grassroots level.

Touching on traditional authority, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin reminded chiefs that all traditional leaders in Okyeman operate under his authority and called for respect for the oath of office and traditional hierarchy.

On the issue of illegal mining, the Okyenhene reiterated that he has not granted permission to any individual or group to engage in mining activities within the Akyem Abuakwa enclave. He warned chiefs who allegedly use his name to extort money from miners, stating that any chief found engaging in such acts will face the full rigours of the law.

The meeting was followed by the annual end-of-year get-together of Nananom, bringing the 2025 Fourth Quarter State Council Meeting to a successful close.
