Family of Late Dr. Omane Boamah Appeals for Security Service Recruitment Slots to Honour His Legacy

The family of the late Minister for the Interior, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, is appealing to the Government of Ghana to consider granting special recruitment slots within the security services to qualified relatives of the eight state officials who perished in the military helicopter crash of 6th August 2025.

According to the family, such a gesture would serve as a national acknowledgment of the dedication, sacrifice, and years of service Dr. Boamah and the other officials rendered to the state before their untimely demise.

On August 6, 2025, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter transporting government officials to an anti-galamsey mission crashed into a forested mountainside in the Ashanti Region. All eight occupants—including Dr. Boamah, who was then serving as Minister for the Interior—lost their lives on impact.

Speaking to journalists, Mr. Omane Paul, uncle of the late minister, described Dr. Boamah as the “hope, icon, provider, and breadwinner” of the family. He noted that the former minister had been supporting many relatives and had given assurance to several unemployed but qualified young people that he would assist them in securing opportunities—assistance that was cut short by his sudden passing.

“Our humble appeal is for the government to consider allocating some recruitment slots in the security services—or any relevant government agency—to the families of the eight distinguished public servants who died in that tragic crash. This gesture will demonstrate that the state values the sacrifices of its dedicated servants,” he said.

The family is also appealing to the government to establish a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) facility in Effiduase, Koforidua, in honour of Dr. Boamah’s legacy as a physician, scientist, and devoted public servant.

Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah was a medical doctor and a prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Before his appointment as Minister for the Interior, he served as Minister for Communications and Presidential Spokesperson. On February 1, 2025, he was appointed Minister for Defence, a position he held until his death.

The family believes that the requested recognition and support would foster patriotism and reassure public officials that the nation remains committed to honouring those who sacrifice their lives in service to Ghana.
