E/R: Sokode-Juaso Chief Donates GHC 50,000, Calls for Enhanced Support for Ofori Panin SHS at 65th Anniversary
The Chief of Sokode-Juaso in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern region, Dr. Barimah Kwabena Awuah Parker I, has appealed for stronger stakeholder support for Ofori Panin Senior High School (OPASS) as the school’s population continues to grow. Delivering his address as Guest of Honour at the school’s 65th Speech and Prize-Giving Day on Saturday, November 15, 2025, the chief—an old student—emphasized the need for parents, teachers, alumni and government to work together to address the school’s infrastructure challenges.
He highlighted the importance of discipline and character formation in students, describing them as vital for responsible citizenship and leadership. The chief also joined the national conversation on student hairstyle regulations, stating that the issue is about respect for rules rather than appearance. As part of his commitment to the school’s progress, he donated GHC 50,000 to support its fundraising efforts.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Nana Kwame Ampaw Addo Frempong, also addressed the gathering, reaffirming that discipline and strong values are key to producing responsible future leaders. He highlighted the significant investments made by the previous NPP government in OPASS, noting that several infrastructure projects were initiated to expand facilities and improve academic work. He called on the current NDC government to continue these projects, complete abandoned works and support new developments to meet the school’s rising population and growing needs.
In addition to his remarks, the MP also donated GHC 10,000 to support the school’s development agenda. He assured the school of his continued advocacy in Parliament and pledged to support initiatives aimed at improving student welfare, infrastructure and the overall academic environment.
Speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony, the Headmaster of OPASS, Mr. Ernest Antwi Gyimah, expressed concern over growing congestion in the school due to inadequate facilities. He revealed that shortages of bunk beds, desks, and the presence of abandoned dormitory blocks and staff bungalows have worsened accommodation and classroom pressure as student intake rises. To enhance safety and monitoring on campus, he announced that the school has installed CCTV cameras as part of Phase 1 of a security improvement project, aimed at strengthening surveillance and ensuring a safer learning environment.
Mr. Gyimah also commended the 1999 year group for their consistent support toward addressing urgent needs. He disclosed that although several letters have been submitted to the relevant authorities for assistance, the 1999 alumni group has repeatedly stepped in to help the school during critical moments.
The event was chaired by Opening Bishop Asante Marfo Ahenkorah, a Chartered Accountant and Insurance Broker, and attended by several dignitaries. These included Nana Brempomah Amoafoa II, Akyem Ati Queen Mother; Nana Akosua Nyarkoa Anim, Krontihemaa of Sokode-Juaso; Mrs. Grace Adza-Wude, Municipal Education Director; Rev. Yaw Korananteng, OPOSSA President; a representative of the Eastern Regional Minister; and the Abuakwa North Municipal Chief Executive, Sup Idrisu, Tafo District Police Commander and men, the press, parents and students.
