E/R: Armed Men Disguised as Security Officers Rob Akwadum Family of GH₵200,000 in Alleged Gold Deal Scam

A supposed gold transaction at Akwadum in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region has ended in a violent robbery, leaving a local family traumatized and out of GH₵200,000 in cash.

According to reports, Derick Boadu was on 19th April 2025 contacted by a man who identified himself as Nana Yaw, allegedly calling from Tarkwa, claiming to have gold for sale. Derick paid GH₵1,000 to facilitate the transportation of the supposed sellers from Tarkwa to Akwadum.

Three men arrived and, due to transportation difficulties, spent the night at Nayamas Guest House at Odumase. Derick said the men later called him at about 4 a.m. the next day to meet for the transaction.

In an effort to verify the authenticity of the gold, Derick introduced the visitors to his father, Nana Boadu, at Akwadum Ankobeabene, where the supposed transaction was to take place.

However, shortly after the meeting began, a group of five armed men, some wearing military uniforms and one in police uniform, stormed the house and robbed the family at gunpoint. The robbers made away with GH₵200,000 in GH₵2,00-denomination notes.

Speaking to the press, Nana Boadu recounted that the robbers overpowered them and fled the scene before they could call for help. A formal complaint was lodged with the police, leading to the arrest of some suspects at Agyaenkotoku in Accra.

The arrested suspects were later identified by the victim’s daughter, who was reportedly sent by the robbers to buy acid. One of the suspects, Kamoko, allegedly mentioned two accomplices — Nana Yaw from Madina and Seidu from the Northern Region.

The suspects have since been remanded into police custody twice, but the victims have raised concerns over reports suggesting that the case is being transferred from Kibi to Accra, suspecting attempts to interfere with investigations. They are therefore appealing to the authorities to ensure that justice is served without compromise.
