Kwahu West Assembly Engages Transport Unions on Decongestion and Urban Planning Measures

The Kwahu West Municipal Assembly has held a critical stakeholder engagement meeting aimed at addressing pressing developmental issues, particularly the ongoing decongestion exercise and challenges related to poor town planning within the municipality.

The meeting brought together various transport unions, including the GPRTU, Cooperative, Protoa, and Okada operators, to deliberate on relocating roadside transport operators and resolving market congestion in the municipality.

In his address, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Tamimu Halidu, highlighted the town’s disorganized urban layout and stressed the need for a collaborative approach to fix the longstanding issues of poor planning. He called on stakeholders to support the Assembly’s vision and urged driver unions to cooperate with the directive to relocate roadside operators to designated areas, describing the current situation as one that fosters indiscipline and disrupts public order.

Hon. Halidu issued a stern warning that commercial drivers who continue to load passengers at unauthorized roadside points after the exercise would face prosecution. He emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring law and order and stated that any resistance to relocation would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

During the engagement, representatives from the unions raised various concerns, including the lack of proper parking space at designated lorry stations and the need to address indiscriminate parking by some unions. In response, the MCE assured participants that his office remains open to dialogue and pledged to work towards resolving these logistical challenges to ensure a smooth relocation process.

The MCE further announced the formation of a joint task force, including personnel from the Municipal Assembly and the Police, to enforce the relocation directive. He charged the Eastern North MTTD Police Commander, Superintendent Foster Asante, to ensure strict compliance and warned that traders and drivers who continue to operate in unauthorized areas will be sanctioned.
