E/R:Kwahu West MCE Engages Traders Ahead of Major Decongestion Exercise in Nkawkaw
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu West, Hon. Tamimu Halidu, has commenced direct engagements with street traders in Nkawkaw ahead of a major decongestion exercise scheduled to begin on June 9. The initiative aims to clear unauthorized trading activities along key streets and restore order to the municipality.
Hon. Halidu, together with his team, visited critical trading areas such as the Nkawkaw Central Market and other identified hotspots. The purpose of the visit was to sensitize traders, seek their cooperation, and emphasize that the upcoming operation is not an act of aggression, but a necessary move to improve safety, sanitation, and urban organization.
He noted that the streets are meant for vehicles and pedestrians—not for trading—and stressed that the current situation poses safety risks and hampers movement. “This is not a punitive exercise,” Hon. Halidu told the media, “but a collective step toward transforming Nkawkaw into a cleaner, more organized town.”
As part of the broader urban renewal plan, key measures such as the installation of CCTV cameras, streetlights, and strategic road closures will be implemented. The MCE affirmed that this initiative aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed national vision for sanitation and urban development.
Hon. Tamimu revealed that extensive consultations had already been held with market leaders, security agencies, transport unions, and other stakeholders. He confirmed that sufficient space is available in designated markets to accommodate affected traders and urged all residents and stakeholders to support the Assembly’s task force to ensure the success of the exercise.
