E/R:Third Batch of Ghana Standards Authority Inspectors Begin Training in Koforidua
The third cohort of 350 out of a total 2,600 trainees for the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) Inspector Programme has officially commenced training at the GNAT Hall in Koforidua, Eastern Region.
Speaking on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohunu, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr. E. Twumasi Ankrah, advised the young trainees to be punctual and take their training seriously. He emphasized that the Police Management Board and the training school will equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge in trade standards operations.
“As future Inspectors of the Ghana Standards Authority, your core responsibilities will include conducting routine checks on the labeling of goods and services, investigating consumer complaints, collecting product samples, and ensuring public education on proper labeling and quality assurance,” he said. He added that their work aligns with the government's 24-hour economy initiative introduced by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.
Dignitaries at the event included Hon. Sampson Ahi, Chief Superintendent Charity Amankwa (Commanding Officer of the Police Training School in Koforidua), Professor Alex Dodoo (Chief Director of the Ghana Standards Authority), and Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, Eastern Regional Minister’s Representative.
Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare, Minister of Trade and Agribusiness, also addressed the gathering. She noted that the GSA Inspector initiative is a key part of President Mahama’s 24-hour economy vision, aimed at improving fairness and transparency in market practices nationwide. “These Inspectors will ensure proper use of weighing scales in markets, accurate product labeling, and fair pricing, especially for farmers selling their produce,” she stated.
She further stressed that traditional and inconsistent measuring tools like the 'olonka', margarine cups, and tomato tins would be phased out as inspectors begin their monitoring activities, ensuring standardized measurements and consumer protection across the country.
