E/R: Cattle Sellers Appeal for Support at Newly Established Livestock Market in Nkawkaw-Oframase
The recently developed livestock market at Nkawkaw-Oframase in the Eastern Region is fast becoming a hub for cattle trade, but sellers are appealing to the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly for essential support to fully realize its potential.
The market, situated on a 4-acre (20-plot) parcel of land, is designed to accommodate up to 2,500 cattle at full capacity and is expected to create over 200 indirect jobs. Sales at the facility take place every Tuesday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering a structured and efficient space for the buying and selling of cattle, sheep, and lambs.
Alhaji Gariba Osman, speaking on behalf of the Nkawkaw Cattle Sellers Association, explained that the market was initiated by local developers to boost the livestock sector and improve revenue mobilization in the municipality. He highlighted the economic and employment benefits of the market and described it as a key investment for the area’s economic future.
Alhaji Osman, however, appealed to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Kwahu West, Hon. Tamimu Halidu, for support in the form of infrastructure and amenities. These include the construction of a mosque, car parks, toilet and urinal facilities, accessible market stores, and provision of security to safeguard traders and patrons. He also called on meat processors and consumers to patronize the market, emphasizing the presence of veterinary supervision and adherence to hygiene standards.
In response, Hon. Tamimu Halidu commended the initiative and acknowledged its importance in boosting agricultural sustainability and job creation in the municipality. He assured the cattle sellers of the Assembly’s commitment to supporting the project, promising to provide security, a place of worship, car parks, toilet facilities, and other critical infrastructure to ensure the market’s success.
The MCE emphasized the Assembly’s role in the continued growth of the livestock market and expressed optimism that the facility would attract a large number of buyers, increase local revenue, and serve as a model for sustainable economic development in the region. He congratulated all stakeholders involved in the project and encouraged residents and traders to patronize the market every Tuesday.
