E/R:NPP Accuses Government of Failing to Credit Nana Addo for Eastern Region Health Projects

The handing over of five newly completed health facilities in the Eastern Region by the Ministry of Health has sparked political controversy, as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region has accused the current administration of failing to acknowledge former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s pivotal role in initiating the projects.

The facilities, located in Jumapo, Kwabeng, Nkwatia, Adukrom, and Achiase, were officially transferred to the Ghana Health Service for operationalization on April 3, 2025. While the move has been hailed as a positive step toward improving healthcare accessibility, regional executives of the NPP say the current government is deliberately sidestepping the truth about the origin of these projects.

According to a statement released by the Eastern Regional Communication Directorate of the NPP, the five health facilities form part of a larger initiative conceived under the Akufo-Addo administration in April 2020. Parliament, during Akufo-Addo's tenure, secured a €79 million loan facility for the construction of eleven 40-bed hospitals and one polyclinic, five of which were earmarked for the Eastern Region.

The statement criticizes the current government for failing to recognize this legacy, instead presenting the facilities as part of its own achievement. “This is a blatant attempt to rewrite history,” the statement read. “A responsible government should be mature enough to acknowledge the contributions of those who came before them, regardless of political differences.”

Beyond the five facilities, the NPP also highlighted several other major healthcare infrastructure projects initiated by the former president in the region. These include the ongoing 600-bed Eastern Regional Hospital expansion, the Agenda 111 district hospital projects in various constituencies, the Anyinam Trauma Hospital, the retooling of the Kwahu-Atibie Hospital, and the Suhum-based drone medical delivery system.

“These projects were carefully planned, funded, and initiated under President Akufo-Addo. Ignoring these facts only exposes the lack of sincerity in the government’s communication,” said Evans Osei Yeboah, Eastern Regional Communications Officer of the NPP.

The party insists that development should be a collective national agenda and not an avenue for political point-scoring. “The people of Ghana deserve transparency, not selective storytelling. History will not be kind to those who distort facts for political convenience,” the statement concluded.
