E/R:Concerned Citizens of Asiakwa Petition Chief Over Devastating Illegal Mining Activities
Asiakwa, Eastern Region — The residents of Asiakwa have raised alarm over the escalating illegal mining activities within the area, particularly around river sites such as Supon, Twafuo, and Akoosi, calling on the traditional leadership to take urgent action.
In a strongly worded petition addressed to Daasebre Twum Ampofo II, Chief of Asiakwa, the community expressed grave concern over the environmental degradation caused by these operations. Signed by Emmanuel Ankamah, coordinator of the Asiakwa Watch Group (AWG), and presented by media personnel Tweneboah Kodua, the petition outlines how illegal mining is polluting water bodies, destroying ecosystems, and compromising food security.

The group urged the Chief to use his influence to halt the illegal activities and restore environmental sanity for the sake of future generations.
Key stakeholders, including the Eastern Regional Minister, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, the EPA Regional Director, and various local chiefs and elders, were all copied in the petition.
The community hopes their plea will lead to immediate action and long-term solutions to protect their environment and livelihoods.
