Eastern Regional Minister Denies NPP's Allegations of Fertilizer Diversion in Yilo Krobo
The office of the Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has responded to recent claims made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Yilo Krobo regarding the distribution of fertilizers to farmers in the region. In a press release issued on Thursday, April 10, 2025, the office categorically dismissed the allegations, calling them baseless and untrue.
The press release, originating from the NPP, had accused the Eastern Regional Minister and certain members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Yilo Krobo of colluding with a representative of the Eastern Regional Minister to divert and sell fertilizers meant for local farmers. The release alleged improper conduct during the distribution of fertilizers from the Somanya warehouse, which serves several districts, including Yilo Krobo.
In response, the office of the Eastern Regional Minister clarified the situation, explaining that the fertilizer distribution process had been overseen by officials from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), based on data collected from farmers. It emphasized that the minister or her associates were not directly involved in the distribution and rejected claims that the exercise had been politicized.
According to the Regional Minister’s office, the warehouse in Somanya had been used to store fertilizers for multiple districts, including Asuogyaman, Yilo Krobo, and others. Following some disturbances in late 2024, when the NDC youth in Yilo Krobo impounded fertilizers from the warehouse under suspicious circumstances, the Eastern Regional Minister took steps to ensure the safe continuation of distribution. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between the police, the Ministry of Agriculture, smallholder farmers, and the NDC youth to safeguard the fertilizers.
The press release from the Eastern Regional Minister’s office further pointed out the flaws in the NPP’s claims, particularly the inconsistencies in the figures provided regarding fertilizer allocations. The NPP’s assertion of a shortfall of 371 bags, allegedly resulting in 1,500 farmers not receiving fertilizers, was described as a "mathematical inefficiency" and unsupported by the available data.
Additionally, the Minister’s office rejected the allegation that fertilizers meant for farmers had been sold. It noted that the NPP's release failed to present any concrete evidence, such as the identities of buyers or vehicle registration numbers, further casting doubt on the claims.
In conclusion, the office of the Eastern Regional Minister reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring food security in the region. The press release urged the public to disregard the "propaganda" and unfounded accusations made by the NPP and encouraged them to report any concerns directly to the appropriate authorities.
The office called for unity, emphasizing the importance of supporting farmers and focusing on the development of the region.
