President Mahama Initiates Process for Chief Justice’s Removal Following Petitions

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has formally initiated the constitutional process for the possible removal of the Chief Justice after receiving three petitions from various individuals seeking such action.

In a press statement issued by the Presidency on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, it was confirmed that the President has forwarded the petitions to the Council of State. This step aligns with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates consultation before further action can be taken regarding the removal of a Chief Justice.

The statement, however, did not disclose the grounds on which the petitions were filed or the identities of the petitioners. The next steps in the process will depend on the recommendations of the Council of State.

This development has sparked discussions across legal and political circles, with analysts weighing in on the potential implications for Ghana’s judiciary and democratic governance.

More updates are expected as the process unfolds.
