E/R:Okyeman and Okuapeman Unite to Combat Illegal Mining and Restore the Birim River

In a historic show of unity, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, Okyenhene, and Oseadeyo Kwasi Akuffo, Okuapehene, have joined forces to eradicate illegal mining along the banks of the Birim River. This collaboration aims to restore the river to its natural state, protect the environment, and strengthen ties between the two traditional enclaves.

Representing Okyeman in this mission, Barima Dr. Awuah Parker, Chief of Akyem Sokode-Juaso, emphasized the proactive nature of the alliance. He will work closely with his counterparts from Okuapeman, including Adantemhene Nana Abass and his deputy, Lateef Lukman. Together, they will lead efforts to reclaim the region’s green landscapes and secure the future of the Birim River.

The Okyenhene, HRM Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has issued a firm directive for the immediate restoration of the river, warning illegal miners to cease their activities or face severe consequences. Speaking at the annual State Council meeting in Akyem Kyebi on February 28, 2025, he called upon Chiefs from Akyem Abuakwa to unite in reversing the damage caused by illegal mining (galamsey), describing the river’s degradation as a direct threat to both the environment and local livelihoods.

To reinforce this commitment, the Okyenhene has dissolved the existing task force and reconstituted a new, results-driven team with representatives from both Okuapeman and Okyeman. This newly formed task force will not only spearhead the fight against illegal mining but also serve as a symbol of unity, peace, and coexistence between the two traditional groups, ensuring sustainable development for future generations.

Pledging his full support, the Okyenhene assured the team of the resources needed to execute their mandate efficiently. He also emphasized that the restoration of the Birim River is a long-term mission—one that he is determined to see through, whether it takes two years or decades. Calling on all Chiefs and community members to take responsibility, he urged collective action in safeguarding the environment and permanently ending galamsey in the region.

With this renewed collaboration and a dedicated task force, Okyeman and Okuapeman stand together in defense of their land, their heritage, and the generations to come.
