E/R:Okyehene Declares Bold Action to Save Birim River from Galamsey Destruction
The Okyehene, HRM Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has issued a decisive directive for the immediate restoration of the Birim River, warning illegal miners to halt their destructive activities or face severe consequences.
Speaking at the annual State Council meeting at his palace in Akyem Kyebi on February 28, 2025, the Okyehene rallied Chiefs from Akyem Abuakwa to join forces in reversing the environmental damage caused by illegal mining (galamsey). He described the continued degradation of the Birim River as a dire threat to both the environment and the livelihoods of communities relying on it.
He issued a stern ultimatum to miners, instructing them to remove all excavators and mining equipment from the river immediately. He emphasized that defying this directive would attract the full force of the law, making it clear that the days of unchecked destruction were over.
To intensify the fight against illegal mining, the Okyehene dissolved the existing task force and reconstituted a new, results-driven team with a clear mandate to restore the river. He assured them of his full support in executing their duties efficiently.
Acknowledging the long-term nature of the restoration effort, the Okyehene vowed to see it through, whether it takes two years or even decades. He urged his Chiefs and community members to take responsibility for safeguarding the river and supporting the fight against galamsey.
He also reminded the gathering that under the National Protection Authority (NPA), destroying water bodies is now illegal. He called for collective action to preserve the Birim River and other vital water sources, reinforcing his unwavering commitment to environmental conservation for future generations.
