E/R:Hon. Dr. Gifty Twum-Ampofo Champions Reading Culture Among School Children in Abuakwa North

Hon. Dr. Gifty Twum-Ampofo, former Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North Constituency and former Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), has urged teachers, parents, and all education stakeholders to instill the habit of reading in schoolchildren to enhance their academic performance and critical thinking skills.

She made this call during the official launch of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Abuakwa North Interact Reading Club at the Presbyterian Church Hall in Akyem New Tafo on February 28, 2025.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Dr. Twum-Ampofo highlighted the remarkable progress students in Abuakwa North have made in science and mathematics, attributing it to various educational programs and projects implemented by the Municipal Education Directorate. She stressed, however, that reading skills must also be prioritized.

"Pupils in Abuakwa North have improved significantly in science and mathematics due to the programs and projects rolled out by the Municipal Education Directorate over the past few years, with support from myself and other individuals and institutions. It is now time to champion reading as well because reading and comprehension are crucial to education," she stated.

To reinforce this initiative, Hon. Dr. Twum-Ampofo donated 60 copies of "Politics of Absalom" by Nana Ofosu Asante Twum to the three public senior high schools in the municipality: Ofori Panin SHS, Kukurantumi; WBM Zion SHS, Old Tafo; and Saviour Memorial SHS, Akyem Osiem.

She further announced that an inter-school reading quiz competition would be organized, with attractive prizes to motivate students to actively engage with the books.

Speaking on behalf of the current MP for Abuakwa North, Nana Kwame Ampaw Addo Frempong, Hon. Emmanuel Asare Gyekye emphasized the role of reading in acquiring knowledge and improving intellectual capacity. He urged pupils to embrace reading as a lifelong habit and encouraged parents to provide their wards with books.

He further assured that the MP is committed to supporting literacy development in the constituency by organizing reading competitions and awarding outstanding students and schools.

Mrs. Grace Adza-Awude, Municipal Director of Education, revealed that 12 basic schools in the municipality have been selected for the reading clubs, including Kukurantumi Presby Primary and JHS, Kukurantumi Ofori Panin Primary and JHS, Kukurantumi R/C Primary and JHS, New Tafo Presby Primary and JHS, Anyinasin Methodist JHS, and Aboabo Basic School.

She commended the efforts of her predecessor, Madam Abena Gyamerah, and Hon. Dr. Gifty Twum-Ampofo in promoting literacy in Abuakwa North. She also acknowledged the contributions of Rev. Osei Bonsu and the Christian Alumni Alliance Ghana in making the initiative a reality.

Madam Abena Gyamerah, former Municipal Education Director and leader of Christian Alumni Alliance Ghana, provided insight into the organization’s mission. She explained that the Alliance, which started as a Metro Inter-Schools Prayer Ministry in 2021, evolved into a fully-fledged Christian NGO in May 2024. Its goal is to engage alumni communities in enhancing education through mentorship, resource mobilization, and policy advocacy.

She donated assorted reading materials to the clubs and announced plans to expand the project nationwide to further improve literacy levels.

The launch event was a vibrant celebration of education, featuring poetry recitals, drama performances, and drum language presentations that highlighted the importance of reading. The ceremony was chaired by Madam Mamatta Alhassan, Assistant Director of the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly.

With these collective efforts from government officials, educators, and stakeholders, the Abuakwa North Interact Reading Club is poised to make a lasting impact on literacy development in the municipality.
