A/R:7 Dead, Several Injured in Violent Clash Between Galamseyers and AngloGold Security in Obuasi-Video
A deadly confrontation erupted at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, leaving over 7 illegal miners (galamseyers) dead and several others injured following a clash with AngloGold Ashanti security personnel. The violent encounter has further heightened tensions in an area already grappling with illegal mining invasions.
The tragic incident reportedly unfolded when a group of illegal miners attempted to expand a narrow pathway on AngloGold's concession despite repeated warnings to vacate the premises. Eyewitnesses revealed that the miners, instructed by their leaders not to carry weapons, were met by security personnel who demanded they halt their activities and leave.
According to one survivor, the situation quickly escalated after initial warning shots were fired. "The soldiers fired three warning shots, but on the third, they aimed at us. At first, we thought they were not live bullets, but when we saw many of our people lying in cold blood, we fled,” the miner recounted.
Disturbing reports and videos show scenes of chaos, with bodies lying lifeless and others severely injured. Vehicles and other facilities belonging to AngloGold Obuasi Mine were vandalized in the aftermath of the clash.
A miner who spoke with mightynews360@gmail.com disclosed that some of the group had knelt before the security team to plead for mercy but were shot dead. "Most of those who knelt to plead did not survive," he revealed.
This incident has sparked fresh concerns over the ongoing issue of illegal mining and the methods employed by security personnel to address the problem. AngloGold Obuasi has long faced challenges with miners encroaching on its concessions, a situation that continues to create friction between local communities and the mining company.
The clash has left the community in mourning and raises critical questions about the balance between enforcing mining regulations and ensuring human rights and safety. Investigations are expected to follow as calls for dialogue and peaceful resolution intensify.
