N/R:Two Arrested at Sangba Inland Checkpoint with G3 Rifles and Ammunition
On Saturday, November 30, 2024, at approximately 5:00 PM, a team of Immigration Officers stationed at the Sangba Inland Checkpoint in the Northern Region intercepted two individuals transporting firearms and ammunition on motorbikes.
The suspects, identified as Mr. Nlibe Otanpi and Mr. Balon Matthew, were riding two separate Haojue motorbikes. One had a registered license plate (M-24-GR 8872), while the other was unregistered. Their possessions included a black drum containing bread and an empty motor box.
The operation, led by Immigration Control Officer (ICO) Farouk Issaka, included ICO Ayer Solomon, Assistant ICO (AICO) I David Consider McKenzie, AICO I Blay Ngolley, AICO II Fred Owusu, and AICO II Mumuni Muntalabi Marzouk. Upon stopping the suspects for routine inspection, the officers requested the motor box be opened. Instead of complying, the suspects attempted to offer a GH₵20 bribe to avoid scrutiny.
When the officers insisted, one of the suspects attempted to flee but was swiftly pursued and apprehended. Upon forcibly opening the motor box, the team discovered two disassembled G3 rifles along with 40 rounds of ammunition.
The suspects were immediately handcuffed, and the Tatale District Command was contacted to take custody of the individuals and the recovered items for further investigation.
The Ghana Immigration Service commends the vigilance and professionalism of the officers on duty, highlighting their commitment to maintaining border security and thwarting illegal activities. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the source of the firearms and the intent behind their transport.
