E/R:Journalist Robbed Amid Rising Tensions at Fanteakwa North Collation Center

 

Eric Obeng Boateng popularly known as Nana Kwabena Boateng Kakape, a journalist with GhanaWeb, was robbed of GH¢400 while covering the ongoing election collation process at the Presbyterian Church Hall in Fanteakwa North Constituency, Eastern Region. The incident adds to the escalating tension in the area as the 2024 general elections near their conclusion.  


According to the journalist, the incident occurred when he stepped outside the collation center to urinate. He was surrounded by unknown political individuals at the in front of the collation center , who searched his pockets and took the money, claiming that no one was permitted to enter or leave the collation center.  


Fortunately, security personnel present at the scene intervened and rescued him from the attackers. However, the shaken journalist was unable to identify the perpetrators when attempting to file a report with the police.  


The incident is indicative of the growing unrest in the Fanteakwa North Constituency, where tensions remain high as supporters of political parties closely monitor the collation process. As of the time of this report, results for the constituency have yet to be declared due to the volatile atmosphere.  


The robbery underscores the need for enhanced security measures to protect media personnel and election officials during critical assignments. It also highlights the challenges journalists face in performing their duties during periods of heightened political activity.  


The authorities are being urged to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of all stakeholders involved in the election process to maintain the integrity of Ghana’s democratic system.
