Election 2024: Police Caution Politicians and Journalists to Uphold Peace

The Anyinam Police Command, responsible for the Atiwa East and Fanteakwa South districts, has engaged political party representatives and journalists in a stakeholders’ meeting to ensure a violence-free general election in December 2024.

The meeting aimed to address the spread of false information, hate speech, and divisive narratives that could threaten peace and social cohesion during the electoral process.

Speaking at the event, DSP Mahama Idrisu, the Anyinam Police Commander, emphasized the critical role journalists play in maintaining peace. He urged them to adopt a culture of verification and fact-checking before publishing news to avoid spreading misinformation or inciting unrest. He stressed the importance of accuracy in reporting, advising journalists to liaise with the police for credible information to prevent conflicts.

DSP Idrisu also assured the public of the police’s commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the election period. He cautioned political parties to exercise restraint and encourage their supporters to comply with the law. While the police aim to avoid arrests, DSP Idrisu stated they would not hesitate to enforce the law to preserve order. He clarified that the police remain impartial and dedicated to ensuring peaceful elections.

On behalf of the political parties, Mr. Albert Nuamah, the NPP Constituency Chairman for Atiwa East, urged fellow politicians to prioritize peace and promote peaceful campaign messages. He highlighted the importance of cooperation among stakeholders to strengthen the nation’s democratic foundations. Mr. Nuamah called on political leaders to use their influence to encourage their supporters to respect the law, noting that a peaceful election benefits not only the parties but the country as a whole.

The meeting was part of broader efforts by the police and stakeholders to ensure a smooth and violence-free election. Both journalists and political representatives were encouraged to play their part in safeguarding peace before, during, and after the December polls.
