World Contraception Day, observed every year on September 26th, highlighted a significant issue in Akyem Asuom in the Kwabibirim Municipality of the Eastern Region of Ghana. Women in the community voiced their lack of awareness regarding female condoms.

One woman remarked, "We don't know how to use female condoms, does it even exist? We only know about male condoms, and that's all we've heard about."

Another added, "We have never seen or used a female condom before. We’ve only heard about it in passing, but we know very little."

This situation in Akyem Asuom reflects a broader issue, both in Ghana and other parts of the world, where the use and knowledge of female condoms remain limited. While male condoms are more widely known and used, female condoms lack the same level of education and accessibility.

Female condoms are an effective form of contraception and also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. However, due to their limited availability and a general lack of knowledge, many women are unable to protect themselves and their partners from unintended pregnancies and diseases.

During World Contraception Day, community leaders and health officials stressed the importance of educating women on all forms of contraception, particularly female condoms. They also called for an increased supply and affordability of female condoms to foster safer sexual practices in the community.

Raising awareness and providing education about the full range of contraceptive options is essential for communities to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. By promoting access to female condoms, women in Akyem Asuom and similar communities can take greater control of their health and well-being.
