Urgent Call to Action: NGO Founder Rallies Support Against Galamsey Crisis
The founder and leader of the Ghana-based non-governmental organization, Save The Nation For Future Leaders, Mr. Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang, has issued a passionate appeal to all Ghanaians to rally behind President John Dramani Mahama in the intensifying battle against illegal small-scale mining, widely known as "galamsey."
In a message that has gained traction across digital platforms—initially surfacing on TikTok before being widely disseminated via WhatsApp—Mr. Apeakorang highlighted the catastrophic impact of the practice. Standing on the banks of a river visibly crippled by pollution, he expressed deep concern over the environmental degradation. He warned that the rampant destruction of water bodies and the encroachment on arable lands pose an existential threat to the nation’s food security, cautioning that a failure to act now could lead to a future plagued by famine.
Emphasizing the urgency of the crisis, Mr. Apeakorang urged citizens to transcend political affiliations and unite in a common cause. He argued that the preservation of the nation’s natural resources is a non-partisan issue that requires collective national resolve to effectively mitigate the long-term damage.
Beyond his domestic call to action, Mr. Apeakorang has taken his advocacy to the international stage. He has officially petitioned the United Nations, seeking global support and technical intervention to assist Ghana in its fight against illegal mining and to secure the country’s ecological future.
