E/R: Nana Adepa Amponsah Yeboah I Declares Akyem Tafo a “No Galamsey Zone,” Rallies Support Against Illegal Mining

Nana Adepa Amponsah Yeboah I, Kyidomhene of Akyem Tafo in the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, has publicly declared her strong opposition to illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, reaffirming her commitment to protecting the lands and environment of Akyem Tafo.

Speaking in an exclusive interview at her residence in Akyem Tafo on Sunday, May 25, 2026, Nana Adepa Amponsah Yeboah I declared Akyem Tafo a “No Galamsey Zone,” stressing that no illegal mining activities will be tolerated within the community and its surrounding areas.

She emphasized that her decision is driven by the need to safeguard the environment, water bodies, farmlands, and the future livelihood of residents—particularly the youth—who stand to suffer the long-term consequences of illegal mining activities.

Her declaration comes at a time when concerns over mining activities continue to spark strong reactions across communities in the Abuakwa area.

It will be recalled that residents of Old Tafo recently united in opposition to a proposed mining operation by Parin Gold Limited following a formal notification by the Abuakwa Municipal Assembly. In response, Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV convened a public gathering at the Awansa Palace where he firmly declared that no mining activities would be permitted within his jurisdiction.

The Chief of Old Tafo underscored the importance of preserving the community’s lands, environment, heritage, and peace, noting that the long-term wellbeing of the people must take precedence over any short-term economic gains associated with mining.

Residents and traditional leaders who attended that gathering pledged their full support to the Chief’s position, vowing to resist any attempts to introduce mining activities in the area.

Nana Adepa Amponsah Yeboah I’s latest declaration adds to the growing resistance against illegal and proposed mining activities within the Abuakwa enclave, signaling a united front by traditional authorities and residents to protect their ancestral lands from environmental degradation.
