E/R:Nana Obrako Sarpong Calls for Unity, Leads Development Drive in Akyem Tontro

The Chief of Akyem Tontro, Nana Obrako Sarpong, has called for peace, unity, and an all-inclusive administration as key pillars for the socio-economic development of the community.

According to him, factionalism remains a major obstacle to progress, urging all rival chiefs to set aside their differences and support his leadership. He noted that his enstoolment as the substantive chief was carried out three weeks ago by the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, through the Akyem Tafohene, Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV.

Nana Obrako Sarpong emphasized his commitment to inclusive governance, revealing plans to involve rival chiefs in his administration to collectively work towards the development of Akyem Tontro.

Addressing some of the pressing challenges in the community, the chief highlighted poor accessibility but indicated that street construction works are currently ongoing in collaboration with the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly to improve mobility and enhance development within the area.

He further disclosed that steps have been taken to address poor telecommunications by writing to network providers to enhance connectivity, as residents continue to face challenges with unreliable network services.

Touching on youth development, Nana Obrako Sarpong assured young people in the community of job opportunities aimed at improving their livelihoods. He added that he would engage Daasebre Adusei Peasah IV to explore employment opportunities for the youth, particularly at the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG), due to its proximity to the community.

The chief made these remarks during a sod-cutting ceremony held on April 8, 2026, for the construction of an ultra-modern ICT centre and a staff common room for the Akyem Tontro M/A Basic School.

The event was marked by a strong display of communal spirit, as youth in the community gathered to undertake communal labour to kickstart the project. Residents described the turnout as unprecedented, attributing it to the exemplary leadership of Nana Obrako Sarpong.

Youth leader Tekpetey Benjamin, who spoke on behalf of the young people, expressed their readiness to support the chief’s development agenda. He commended Nana Obrako Sarpong for his dedication and lauded the initiative to construct the ICT centre and staff common room.

Meanwhile, the Headmaster of Akyem Tontro M/A Junior High School, Mr. Budu Sheriff, expressed gratitude to the chief for his continuous support to the school. However, he outlined several challenges facing the institution, including deteriorated windows and doors, a damaged security gate, faded paint, and lack of electricity.

He lamented that the poor state of infrastructure has led to frequent break-ins and other unacceptable acts, including defecation in classrooms.

Mr. Sheriff therefore appealed to authorities, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and well-meaning individuals to support the school in addressing these challenges to create a conducive learning environment.
